| DESIGNING THE CROSS-SECTION OF THE LOAD BEARING: SLATS AND RELATIVE DEFORMATION The cross-section of the load-bearing slats (each seat consists of two coupled together) has been designed from the point of view of appearance and then checked by an Engineering office specialised in this field by means of a calculation of the structural resistance. The main considerations of the Engineering Office are given below. Analysis of the profile. The distance used for the calculation is 940 mm. for each individual span, corresponding to the 1 m. bench. For the analysis of the profile two example load situations were taken into consideration: the first considers a load concentrated in the middle equal to 1 KN (100 Kg.), while the second considers a load evenly distributed over the whole profile equal to 1.5 KN. The two load conditions examined derive from the need to consider the work situations in which the bench may be used, also bearing in mind where the bench may be installed and the most critical situations to which such an atypical structure may be subjected. The stress analysis was carried out using a finished element calculation programme (MIDAS/Gen by Midas I.T. Inc.). The whole profile was modelled with two-dimensional shell elements. The geometry and the results of the analysis carried out are given below. New profile – Analysis for concentrated load: maximum deformation. As can be seen from the analysis stated above, the proposed profile bears a maximum stress equal to 92 MPa (920 Kg/cm2) and a maximum deformation of about 5.7 mm. This situation is obviously acceptable from a static point of view compared with a small increase in the section of the profile and in the relative weight and, furthermore, the deformation itself is not only slight, but also very well balanced. |
